One innovation that takes advantage of the antimicrobial activity of potassium sorbate is the incorporation of this molecule into starch-based films for food packaging. Potassium sorbate, along with citric acid, is incorporated into edible food coatings. A plasticizer like sorbitol or glycerol may also be incorporated. These anti-microbial, food-safe films are able to inhibit growth of food-borne pathogens while otherwise preserving the quality and freshness of the food. These innovative films were demonstrated to be effective for storage and preservation of fruits and cheeses.

Despite its numerous benefits, the use of sodium benzoate is not without controversy. When consumed in large quantities or in combination with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), sodium benzoate can potentially form benzene, a known carcinogen. Consequently, there have been calls for stricter regulations regarding its use, particularly in soft drinks and other acidic foods. Nevertheless, the quantities typically consumed in the average diet are well within safety limits established by health authorities.

Additionally, research into sulfur dynamics in soil and its interaction with other nutrients will further enhance our understanding of its role in crop production. This knowledge will enable farmers to make informed decisions regarding fertilizer application, ultimately resulting in healthier crops and more productive soils.

In a small study published in the European Journal of Nutrition in 2020, researchers examined the effects of several food additives, including titanium dioxide, along with artificial sweeteners and cleaning products by testing the fecal samples of 13 people. Titanium dioxide was among the samples that “induced significant shifts in microbiome community structure.”  The growth of the bacterium species belonging to C. leptum, which has been shown to decrease in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, “significantly decreased in the presence of … titanium dioxide” among other additives and sweeteners tested.

Nowadays, the use of nanoparticles in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products has increased. In the last case, nano-sized components are used without proper characterization of their effects, leading to unwanted and dangerous consequences for the users [1,2].

In order to contribute with experimental evidence that could help to achieve a better understanding of the field for future regulation, in the present work, the biocompatibility of commercial P25TiO₂NPs (one type of TiO₂NPs used in sunscreen formulations) and two novel functionalized P25TiO₂NPs were evaluated under solar simulated irradiation. White light, generated by red, blue, and yellow LEDs, together with UV ones, was chosen to simulate the solar spectra. Functionalization of TiO₂NPs was made with antioxidant vitamins in order to prevent the expected photo-initiated ROS production when nanoparticles are exposed to the simulated solar spectra. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin C were chosen to carry out the functionalization because they are water-soluble, low-cost, and are a constitutive part of biological processes. In addition, it is known that both have the potential to prevent macromolecular oxidation by ROS [23], [24], [25], [26].
