Read MoreDespite its popularity, sodium cyclamate has faced scrutiny and regulation. Initially, its use was widespread; however, concerns regarding its safety arose in the late 1960s when studies indicated a potential link to cancer in laboratory animals. As a result, the United States banned sodium cyclamate in 1970. Nonetheless, many other countries, including those in Europe and Asia, continued its use, subject to safety evaluations and limits on consumption. Recently, reassessments of its safety profile have led to discussions about potential reapproval in the U.S. market, reflecting the ongoing debate over the safety of artificial sweeteners.

Read MoreOne of the primary concerns surrounding residual solvents is their impact on drug safety. Many of these solvents have been linked to serious health risks, including carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, and organ damage. As such, regulatory agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have established stringent guidelines for the permissible levels of residual solvents in pharmaceutical products. Compliance with these guidelines is essential for manufacturers to ensure that their products meet safety standards and gain market approval.

Furthermore, while xanthan gum is derived from the fermentation of sugars, the source sugars can vary. For individuals with certain food allergies or intolerances, it is essential to ensure that the xanthan gum utilized in any product does not originate from their allergenic sources.
As consumers, it is crucial to be proactive about our food choices. Reading labels with a critical eye can help identify harmful preservatives. Opting for fresh, whole foods and supporting local farmers' markets not only reduces exposure to these additives but also promotes healthier eating habits.

Flavorings play a prominent role in defining the taste of food products. They can be either natural, derived from plant or animal sources, or artificial, created through chemical processes. The use of flavor enhancers, such as monosodium glutamate (MSG), has sparked debate among consumers regarding their safety and potential health implications. While many regulatory bodies assert that these additives are safe in moderation, some individuals report sensitivity to certain flavorings, making it essential for food manufacturers to inform consumers adequately.

In addition to the toxic effects of TiO2 NPs, discussed in previous chapters, these NPs have been also shown to promote photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism, resulting in the enhanced growth of spinach. It increases the absorption of light and accelerates the transfer and transformation of the light energy. It was also found that treatment with nano-sized TiO2 significantly increased the level of antioxidant enzymes, and decreased the ROS accumulation and malonyldialdehyde content in spinach chloroplasts under visible and UV irradiation. TiO2 NPs also increased the superoxide dismutase activity of germinating soybean, enhanced its antioxidant ability, and promoted seed germination and seedling growth.

Nano-sized TiO2 generally shows low or no acute toxicity in both invertebrates and vertebrates. However, exposure of Daphnia magna to 20 ppm TiO2 for 8 consecutive days was found to cause 40 % mortality. Zhu et al. showed minimal toxicity to D. magna after 48 h exposure, while upon chronic exposure for 21 days, D. magna suffered severe growth retardation and mortality. A significant amount of nano-sized TiO2 was found also accumulated in the body of the animals. Similar findings with coated nano-sized TiO2 (T-Lite™ SF, T-Lite™ SF-S and T-Lite™ MAX; BASF SE) were reported by Wiench et al. Biochemical measurements showed that exposure to TiO2 NPs induces significant concentration-dependent antioxidant enzyme activities in D. magna. Lee et al. showed that 7 and 20 nm-sized TiO2 induced no genotoxic effect in D. magna and in the larva of the aquatic midge Chironomus riparius.
Australian researchers examined how titanium dioxide as a food additive affected gut microbiota in mice by orally administering it in drinking water. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition in 2019, found the treatment could “alter the release of bacterial metabolites in vivo and affect the spatial distribution of commensal bacteria in vitro by promoting biofilm formation. We also found reduced expression of the colonic mucin 2 gene, a key component of the intestinal mucus layer, and increased expression of the beta defensin gene, indicating that titanium dioxide significantly impacts gut homeostasis.” The changes were then linked to colonic inflammation, along with a higher expression of inflammatory cytokines, which are signal proteins that help with regulation. The researchers concluded that titanium dioxide “impairs gut homeostasis which may in turn prime the host for disease development.”

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have also been found in human placentae and in infant meconium, indicating its ability to be transferred from mother to fetus.
Does not work with hydrogen sulfide and alkaline solutions. It is easy to decompose in the presence of acid to produce hydrogen sulfide gas. It is easily oxidized in the air and deteriorates after moisture. Whiteness and hiding power are strong.
Below are selected applications of photocatalytic pollutant decomposition processes on titanium oxide:
1. Self-cleaning surfaces: for the production of glass for spotlights, traffic lights, car mirrors, window panes, for road paints, for covering sound-absorbing screens and tunnel walls.
2. Air cleaning and odor removal: filters that are used in enclosed spaces (e.g. public toilets) or filters for air-conditioning equipment.
3. Water treatment: groundwater treatment installations, water purification installations in the intakes of drinking water from rivers.
4. Self-disinfecting materials: towels, linings, clothing, equipment in hospitals, wall surfaces of operating rooms.
5. Removal of lesions: anti-cancer therapy.
In summary, the Food Directorate's position is that there is no conclusive scientific evidence that the food additive TiO2 is a concern for human health. This is based on a review of the available scientific data relevant to food uses of TiO2. However, we will continue to monitor the emerging science on the safety of TiO2 as a food additive and may revisit our position if new scientific information becomes available.
Research has shown that, when ingested as a food additive, titanium dioxide and its nanoparticles can impact, alter, and/or damage important protective bacteria in the gut, along with the metabolic pathways of gut bacteria.
